“I looked through the fencing, and it was empty there; but I could see my mother, when she was actually much younger than I was when I was looking there. And I could see her with my three brothers and sisters; they were just really young kids, probably hanging on her skirt; and I was in her arms as an infant. And I could see her looking forward to nothing. Everything they had lived for, worked for, was gone; nothing ahead. She didn't know where she was going, what was going to happen, who was going to do what to whom and to these children, depending on her.”
